What decides whether a book can be adapted

Public domain: when a book is no longer owned

A work is in the public domain when copyright no longer restricts it, so anyone may copy, adapt or publish it without permission. As of 2026-09-25.

The governments read describe the same moment in their own words. GOV.UK says that once copyright has expired anyone can use or copy the work; Australia's Attorney-General's Department says expired material may be used without permission.

In the United States, everything published before January 1, 1931 has reached it. Elsewhere the date depends on when the author died.

Public domain is always public domain somewhere. The same book can be free in one country and protected in the next, which is why the libraries that collect such texts name the country their judgement rests on.

Standard Ebooks goes a step further with its own contribution, dedicating its editing and cover work to the public domain as well.

2The adaptation step in practice

Once the rights in “Public domain” are settled, SceneMixer describes the adaptation itself like this:

An AI short drama is a serialized show of 60–120 second vertical episodes whose cast, sets and footage are generated by AI. Making one takes six steps: analyze the script into episodes, lock a consistent cast with reference art, localize for your market, write and edit storyboards, generate each 4–15 second shot, then composite and publish.

A script longer than about 10,000 characters (counted as Chinese-equivalent characters) is read in two passes: first the cast, sets and props, then the episode list with a short outline per episode.
