What decides whether a book can be adapted

Choose the edition before the upload

A public-domain story can reach you inside an edition with its own terms. Standard Ebooks dedicates its own work to the public domain; Project Gutenberg's licence covers its trademark; Wikisource's contributions are under CC BY-SA. As of 2026-09-25.

Fig. 1 Each reading keeps the quote it was taken from.

Modern editions add more: introductions, notes, corrected text, translations. Those additions can be protected even when the story is not.

An adaptation built from the author's words, not an editor's additions, keeps the question simple.

Note which edition was used, with its source, before anything is uploaded.

2Turning the book into episodes

Once the rights in “Choose the edition before the upload” are settled, SceneMixer describes the adaptation itself like this:

SceneMixer turns a novel into a watchable short-drama series in one pipeline: upload the novel (Chinese or English) → AI extracts characters, scenes, and an episode-by-episode structure → generates consistent character and scene art → writes storyboard scripts → renders video segment by segment (16:9 by default, 9:16 in one setting) → composites full episodes.

That is SceneMixer's core design: characters live in a persistent asset library with locked reference art, and every segment that features a character is generated against those references — same face in episode 1 and episode 50.
