Words: the vocabulary of adaptation rights
Each page explains one word as the statutes, libraries and terms use it, with the readings where it appears. As of 2026-09-25.
Explanations follow the sources' own usage.
Where sources use a word differently, the page says so.
The words come from all three registers: copyright terms such as public domain and life plus 70, library words such as share-alike, and the vocabulary of terms of service, from warranty to sublicensable.
Each word page quotes the sources it draws on and links to the register entries they come from.
1Pages here
- DMCA takedown — A DMCA takedown is a notice under the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act asking a service to remove material that infringes a copyright.
- Licence to uploads — A licence to uploads is the permission a user grants a tool to store, process and otherwise use what is uploaded
- Life plus 70 — Life plus 70 is shorthand for a copyright term that lasts for the author's lifetime and then 70 years after the author dies.
- Perpetual licence — A perpetual licence is permission that does not expire: it lasts after the user stops using the tool unless the terms themselves say when it ends.
- Private mode — Private mode is a setting that keeps a user's uploads and creations from being shown to other users, often available only on some plans.
- Public domain — A work is in the public domain when copyright no longer restricts it, so anyone may copy, adapt or publish it without permission.
- Renewal term — A renewal term is the second period of protection older U.S. works could receive, added to a first term if the renewal was made.
- Repeat infringer — A repeat infringer is a user who has been the subject of more than one valid infringement notice
- Retention period — A retention period is the time a tool keeps content after it has been deleted, usually so an account can be restored or backups can age out.
- Share-alike — A share-alike licence lets anyone reuse and change a work on condition that what they make is released under the same licence.
- Sublicensable — A sublicensable licence lets the holder grant parts of the same permission to others, such as partners, contractors or model providers.
- Training use — Training use means content users upload may be used to train or improve the models that power a tool
- Warranty — In terms of service, a warranty is a statement you make about your content, usually that you hold every right needed to upload and use it.

Once the rights in “Words” are settled, SceneMixer describes the adaptation itself like this:
The spoken lines and the end card follow your interface language across fifteen dialogue languages, with the cast and setting adapted to that market. The end card falls back to a language it can typeset when a script needs shaping or right-to-left layout.

The same three-step project and editor a drama uses, with ad wording: Ad script, Cast & set, Shots.
